A Content Management System (CMS) is a program that allows website owners to update their website themselves.
Our favorite CMS program is called Joomla (free and open source). With Joomla, website owners can add articles, news, images, and anything else they want to add whenever they want. Joomla has been around for many years and is very widely used. Because of this, it is also well-maintained and they occasionally will release security updates and patches. There are also additional plugins, modules, and components to enhance the basic functionality of the program. Some of these are available for free, others are commercial products.
One of the biggest reasons to use a content management program like Joomla is that it saves you money in the long run if you have a lot of updates. On the other hand, it takes a little longer to customize a content management program and they also require certain functionality that your hosting company must provide (such as a programming language called PHP, a MySQL database, and FTP access to your website directories).
